About Dr. Michael Roizen
Michael F. Roizen, MD, is cofounder of RealAge and chairman of
the RealAge Scientific Advisory Board. He is a Phi Beta Kappa
graduate of Williams College and Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of
the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.
He performed his residency in internal medicine at Harvard's Beth
Israel Hospital and completed a tour of duty in the Public Health
Service at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory
of Irv Kopin and Nobel Prize winner Julius Axelrod. He is certified
by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American
Board of Anesthesiology. He is 59 calendar years of age, but his
RealAge is 41.2.
Dr. Roizen is past chairman of a Food and Drug Administration
advisory committee and a former editor of six medical journals.
He has published more than 155 peer-reviewed scientific papers,
100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials, and 4 medical books, including
a medical best-seller. He has also received 12 U.S. patents and
several foreign patents.
After 9 years on the faculty at the University of California,
San Francisco, he started and served as medical director of the
Chicago Program for Executive Health. He also chaired the top-10-rated
department of anesthesia and critical care at the University of
Chicago. He then became dean of the School of Medicine and vice
president for biomedical sciences at SUNY Upstate. After serving
as CEO of the Biotechnology Research Corporation of Central New
York, he accepted positions as chief wellness officer of the Cleveland
Clinic and as chair of the Division of Anesthesiology, Critical
Care Medicine and Comprehensive Pain Management at the Cleveland
Clinic.
His first general-audience book, RealAge: Are You as Young as
You Can Be? (HarperCollins Publishers) became a New York Times
#1 best-seller and was awarded the Best Wellness Book of 1999
by the Books for a Better Life Awards. RealAge has been translated
into more than 20 languages and was #1 in four other countries.
His follow-up, The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What
You Eat (HarperCollins), written with Dr. John La Puma, also became
a New York Times best-seller in April 2001. His third book was
Cooking the RealAge Way (Harper Collins), also with Dr. La Puma,
and he published an update to the original RealAge book, The RealAge
Makeover (HarperCollins) in 2004. His most recent books are YOU:
The Smart Patient, YOU: The Owner's Manual, and YOU: On A Diet,
all written with Dr. Mehmet Oz and the latter two New York Times
best-sellers.
Dr. Roizen has given over 1,200 lectures to professional medical
groups and has been recognized with over 20 professional lectureships.
He has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show 4 times, Today 17 times,
20/20, CBN, CNN, CBS, Good Morning America, The Montel Williams
Show, and PBS. He was also featured in magazines including Fortune,
Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal,
Reader’s Digest, Men’s Health, and Prevention.
Dr. Roizen still practices anesthesiology and internal medicine,
using the RealAge metric to motivate his patients. He has personally
delivered medical care to 8 Nobel Prize winners, 340 former smokers,
over 100 Fortune 500 CEOs and CFOs, and countless others. He has
been listed in the Best Doctors in America since 1989. His wife
is a developmental pediatrician, also listed in the Best Doctors
in America. The Roizens have two children: Jenny, a recent Williams
graduate and PhD graduate student at California Institute of Technology,
and Jeffrey, an MD/PhD student at Washington University.
About Dr. Mehmet C. Oz
Mehmet C. Oz, MD, member of the RealAge Scientific Advisory Board,
coauthored with RealAge expert Dr. Roizen the New York Times #1
best-sellers YOU: The Smart Patient (2006) and YOU: The Owner's
Manual (2005). He has authored more than 350 original Publications,
book chapters, abstracts, and books and has received several patents.
Dr. Oz is professor and vice-chairman of surgery, Columbia University.
He is medical director of the Integrated Medicine Center and director
of the Heart Institute at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University
Medical Center. His research interests include heart replacement
surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and healthcare policy.
Dr. Oz received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University
(1982) and obtained a joint MD and MBA (1986) from the University
of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School.
He was awarded the Captain’s Athletic Award for leadership
in college and was president of the student body during medical
school.
Memberships include the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, American
Board of Surgery, American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, Society
of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, International
Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, American College of
Cardiology, and American Society for Artificial Internal Organs.
Awards include election as a Global Leader for Tomorrow (1999)
by the World Economic Forum; the prestigious American Association
for Thoracic Surgery Robert E. Gross Research Scholarship (1994-6);
the Blakemore Prize for research (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991) from
the College of Physician & Surgeons, Columbia University;
the research award from the American Society for Laser Medicine
and Surgery (1991); and the clinical research award and grant
from the New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center
(1993). He was voted Turkish-American of the Year in 1996 and
was elected one of the Doctors of the Year by Hippocrates magazine
and Healers of the Millennium by Healthy Living. His book, Healing
from the Heart, won the prestigious “Books for a Better
America” award (1999) and Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
was elected as a Best Health Science Book by Doody’s Review
Journal (2000).
Dr. Oz is also the founder and chairman of HealthCorps® (www.healthcorps.org),
a proactive health movement intended to help stem the crisis of
child obesity through school-based health education and mentoring
as well as community events and outreach to underserved populations.
